Welcome

Based in Greetham, The Wheatsheaf is 6 miles from Oakham and 4 miles from Rutland Water. Carol and Scott took over the Wheatsheaf in March 2008. The seasonal Modern British menu changes weekly. The wine list is based on wines from around the world with a good selection by the glass. We also have an excellent selection of beers and local cask ales.

Our Story

Scott and Carol have run the foodie’s paradise that is The Wheatsheaf in Greetham, for the last nine years. With a pedigree background mainly in London, where they moved after meeting whilst studying catering and hotel management, Scott and Carol can include Bibendum and the Dorchester on their respective CV’s – the latter was where Scott won Waiter of the Year, the same year that Marcus Wareing won chef of the year.

Since it opened it's doors, The Wheatsheaf has gone on to featuring in the MICHELIN guide and being rated as one of top 50 Gastropubs in the UK.

RECOMMENDED BY THE GREAT FOOD CLUB

At first glance it’s sometimes hard to tell the difference between a great village pub and an average one. The garden can be a giveaway and the signage is sometimes an indicator. But you just can’t tell till you go in and try the food and drink.

The Wheatsheaf looks lovely, with a stream trickling gently along in the garden and the pub’s neat exterior giving passers-by the come on. So those entering for the first time will expect good things. But from the outward signals they certainly won’t predict the exceptional dining experience they are about to enjoy, because with chef Carol Craddock in the kitchen, the food served here is up there with the very best in the region.

Great Food Club was hugely impressed after eating at The Wheatsheaf. Carol has worked in kitchens for the last 20 years and has a CV that includes a stint at Bibendum under Simon Hopkinson and a head chef position at The Phoenix Restaurant in Putney. She is clearly talented and from her food you can tell she enjoys her job, producing stunning flavours that you just don’t expect to taste in most village pubs. Our visit was enhanced by homemade breads, a stunningly vibrant chicken and chorizo dish and a seriously good homemade pavlova.

It’s great to see, too, that The Wheatsheaf hasn’t sold its soul in pursuit of Rutland’s affluent dining market. The front bar remains a sociable drinking zone where locals can enjoy a pint.

We featured in the “Estrella Damm” top 50 Gastropubs as voted for by top foodies and hospitality experts in 2021.

THE MENUS

Carol has worked in kitchens for the last 20 years, studying in Leicester before moving to London. She worked at Bibendum under Simon Hopkinson before taking up a Head Chef position at The Phoenix Restaurant in Putney. At The Havelock Tavern in Hammersmith she worked with Jonny Haughton before Opening Vinoteca wine bar in Farringdon as Head Chef. This was her last challenge in London before moving to Greetham.

The philosophy of The Wheatsheaf is to use fresh seasonal food. Carol will change the menu weekly and makes fresh bread at the pub daily. She uses meats locally sourced and high quality sustainable fresh fish. Seasonal fruit and vegetables are only used here.
